Close ups of flowers are so sensual to me. Their literal purpose is reproduction, all of that temporal beauty with the sole aim of continuing the species. Most blooms last only a few days to a few weeks.
The plant puts a tremendous amount of energy into producing those blooms, attracting the pollinators that will enable the plant reproduce.
Every time I paint a flower, I have an opportunity to study and appreciate its delicate form. The colors, textures and shapes all work together to draw the eye inward to the center where the magic happens. My flower paintings can evoke a surprising amount of emotion as a result.
These are not frivolous subjects. They are an homage to existence, a portrait of the meaning of life. We are all here for such a short time, and every breath we take is a cause for celebration. Isn't life a rare and precious gift?
